Louisiana's health secretary and attorney general say a joint crackdown on Medicaid fraud is identifying millions of dollars in improper payments and recovering more of them than in previous years.

Health and Hospitals Secretary Alan Levine said Thursday that the total amount of improper payments identified rose from $1.4 million in 2007 to more than $6.2 million in fiscal 2009.

He says the state got back more than $5.8 million of the improper payments made in fiscal 2009 - a 93 percent recovery rate.

Levine says that the state prosecuted 113 of the 182 cases sent to Attorney General Buddy Caldwell, and his office won 56 of those cases. That compares to 82 cases sent to the attorney general's office in 2007, with 71 prosecutions and 44 convictions.
