State offices stay closed in at least 49 parishes

NEW ORLEANS - Louisiana remains stilled by an arctic front, with daybreak temperatures at or below freezing statewide.

Ice has closed more than 20 highways statewide - including every interstate through Baton Rouge, where front yards were frosted and streets mostly bare of cars.

State police say there were 35 weather-related wrecks overnight in central Louisiana, but the New Orleans and Houma metro areas were quiet.

The cold chilled commerce in uptown New Orleans. Streets usually awash with school and workday traffic were largely quiet Wednesday morning.

Power companies say fewer than 600 customers were without electricity at 8:30 a.m. - down from 2,200 about 90 minutes earlier
