BATON ROUGE - Republican state Rep. Paul Hollis says he's ending his bid to unseat Mary Landrieu and become Louisiana's next U.S. senator.

Hollis announced his decision Monday, saying it came after "prayer and thoughtful consideration."

The first-term lawmaker from St. Tammany Parish gave no reason for dropping out of the race. But since filing his federal statement of candidacy in December, he's reported little fundraising and has lagged in the polls.

Hollis was one of three announced GOP contenders seeking to keep Landrieu, a Democrat, from a fourth term in office. Other Republicans for the Nov. 4 election are U.S. Rep. Bill Cassidy and retired Air Force Col. Rob Maness, a tea party favorite.

Hollis said he will continue to work to oust Landrieu even though he's exiting the race.
