State investigators visit Port Allen Mayor's Office
PORT ALLEN - A team of state investigators paid a visit to the Port Allen Mayor's Office Monday, and made very clear the trip was no April Fools' prank.
"No joke here," Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera said. "We are doing an audit and will issue a public report when it's finished."
News 2 learned when the investigators showed up at the Mayor's office, she left.
A series of investigations News 2 conducted show possible wrongdoing by Mayor Deedy Slaughter. Slaughter billed taxpayers for a trip to Washington DC even though there's no official record any official business was conducted. She claims she met with Senator Mary Landrieu, but Landrieu has no record of ever having a meeting with Slaughter.
We also uncovered she overbilled taxpayers for meals and mileage for her trip. Her brother-in-law, Ralph Slaughter paid for the entire trip, but she submitted the expense report.
"When we are finished with the report, we will give it to a couple of different parties," Purpera said. "If we believe there are issues of criminality, elements of an illegal act, we'll give it to the appropriate parties, the District Attorney or United States Attorney."
We requested an interview from Mayor Deedy Slaughter. She never got back to us by news time. It could take two weeks to a month to finish the audit.
