BATON ROUGE - After a barrage of inclement weather, the Greater Baton Rouge State Fair reopened Wednesday evening.

Due to recent heavy rainfall in East Baton Rouge Parish over the past few days, crews spent the day Tuesday preparing the grounds for fairgoers.  The fair closed early Saturday as weather conditions worsened, and parking couldn't safely accommodate vehicles. As rain continued to fall on-and-off through the weekend and into the early part of the week, officials were forced to keep the fair closed Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.

While there is still time to enjoy the fair, some are concerned about the impact the closure will have on the charities supported by its operations.  Since 1986, more than $3 million has been raised.

"It's hard to put a number on it right now in the case of a loss because we have a few days to go," said Chairman J.H. Martin.  "If we were to get through the weekend without much rain, we could be on the positive side," said Martin.

The Great Baton Rouge State Fair will continue to run through Nov. 1. Tickets that have already been purchased will be good for any day the fair is open.
