BATON ROUGE - The clock is ticking on the move to create the city of St. George, with three months left for supporters to get 18,000 signatures.

The committee to incorporate the city has until July 23 to turn in their petitions to put it up for a vote. Supporters met with members of the East Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce, saying they're still gathering signatures.

The group faces a challenge from the legislature. A bill moving through the capital could put the process on hold for a year. The idea is to give the parish time to determine the impact of a new city.

St. George supporters are working to get enough signatures to put the proposal up for a vote, before that bill can become law. If businesses opt out of St. George and annex to Baton Rouge, supporters say they'd have to make changes to a proposed city budget.

"We want to have a great education system, the rest will take care of itself. If Baton Rouge wants to grab the mall and wants to grab the casino, you know, go do it, we're not building the city around the mall. We're building the city around the citizens and our children," said Norman Browning with the committee to incorporate St. George.

St. George supporters say they are on pace to get the 18,000 signatures necessary in time for the November vote.

Watson in Livingston Parish is also working to incorporate their city by the July 23 deadline.
