BATON ROUGE – The St. George Fire Department hosted a blood drive on Wednesday in honor of the officers involved in Sunday's shooting.

Robert Rainwater, of the St. George Fire Department, said that the department tries to pull together to help in any way when situations like what happened on Sunday occur.

"We have an inherently dangerous job, we prepare for situations like this, but we never expect them to happen to our family. When something like this happens, we all pull together, and find out what's needed, and we make it happen," Rainwater said.

Many firefighters took the time to donate blood on Wednesday morning, along with dozens of people from throughout the community.

"The blood banks are running a little low, and with everything going on, just any small thing to try and help out," Garron Passaman, blood donor, said.

Along with the blood drive, the fire department will also be helping in other ways.

"We contacted some people, and see what they needed, and the first thing they needed was blood, so we set up a blood drive, so in the next coming days and weeks, we'll be setting up things for the families, whatever we can do try to help and make this time a little easier for the families," Rainwater said.

The blood drive is a part of a city-wide effort to help the officers. Another blood drive is set for Thursday, July 21 that will be hosted by the governor's office.
