ST. GABRIEL - First-time home buyers in St. Gabriel are getting help to achieve the American dream.

A subdivision geared toward affordable housing has opened up off River Road in Iberville parish.  The homes come complete with kitchen appliances, vaulted ceilings, and 100% financing; each cost just over $100,000.

Many potential residents didn't know how to buy a house, so the community association set up first-time homebuyer classes and provide $5,000 toward mortgage payments at signing.

Community leaders hope the subdivision will spur growth in St. Gabriel and eventually attract businesses.

A new school in the area is also providing incentives for people to live in that area.  The Arts, Science and Math Academy is on track to be completed in August, and the children of any resident of the new subdivision automatically qualify to attend the new school.
