ST. GABRIEL - Emergency sirens malfunctioned, and rang for about twenty minutes on the eastern bank of Iberville Parish Friday.

The alarm rang at the signal near the intersection of Bayou Paul Lane and Highway 30 Friday morning. Emergency officials in Iberville Parish said something was wrong with the alarm system at that one location and was able to disconnect it. No other alarms sounded.

A technician was spending the day at the site Friday to get the alarm operational again.

The alarm caused a stir among people in St. Gabriel, who are used to only hearing the sound when tests are done earlier in the week. Otherwise, an alarm sounding could signal a significant emergency at a plant.

Local police and parish officials said they received calls asking about the alarm Friday and were telling people all was well.

Iberville Parish has more than two dozen sirens in place. Eighteen were installed by plants. Each alarm costs about $30,000.
