St Bernard Parish president indicted: campaign finance
BATON ROUGE - St. Bernard Parish President Dave Peralta has been indicted on three counts each of perjury and of filing false campaign reports.
The charges handed up Wednesday accuse him of using campaign donations to gamble in New Orleans-area casinos.
Peralta testified for about two hours before the East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury earlier Wednesday.
He declined comment before entering the grand jury room earlier Wednesday. Defense attorney Martin Regan confirmed that Peralta was testifying with an eye to averting indictment.
Peralta has said casino expenses were campaign related and he did not use campaign money to gamble.
The indictment is the third since a state criminal investigation began in late 2013. One case is pending; prosecutors dropped the other.
