Special Olympic athletes compete at Woodlawn High today
BATON ROUGE - You can watch some of the top Special Olympics athletes in Louisiana compete in Baton Rouge beginning today.
Crews braved the rain yesterday to set up hurdles and other track and field events at Woodlawn High School. Over 500 athletes from East Baton Rouge, Zachary, Ascension, and Central school systems will be competing. this is a qualifying event for athletes who want to participate in the state competition in May.
"It's a chance for them to show what they can do," organizers and Special Olympics parent Audrey Segura. "Instead of being told they can't, they're told they can. They can come out, They can participate, they can be winners. It's an amazing experience"
Middle and high school athletes take the field at Woodlawn today from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Elementary school students participate at the same time tomorrow. The event is free and open to the public.
