The Southern Jaguars came out fired up following the firing of their head coach Stump Mitchell, jumping out to a 28-0 lead then hanging on as Jackson State roared back scoring 21 unanswered points.

Southern wins their first game of the season beating rival Jackson State 28-21 on the road in Jackson, Mississippi.

The Jags improve to 1-1 in SWAC play and 1-2 overall.
