Southern, SLU football going for championships
Baton Rouge- It has been a long time since Southern and Southeastern Louisiana University have been this good at football.
The Southern Jaguars (8-4) are back in the SWAC Football Championship for the first time since 2004 and are facing a familiar opponent. The Jags played Jackson State (8-3) back on Sept. 28th and lost 19-14. A win gives Southern its first SWAC title in a decade.
In his second season at SLU, Coach Ron Roberts has led the Lions (10-2) to the first FCS playoff birth in school history. The team already has the most wins in school history and captured the Southland Conference Championship. It was the program's first conference championship since back-to-back Gulf State Conference Champions in 1961-62. The Lions are taking on the Sam Houston Bearkat (8-4) team they beat 34-21 three weeks ago. With a win, the Lions would take on the winner of the Maine/New Hampshire game.
Southern kicks off at Reliant Stadium in Houston Saturday at 1 p.m. The Lions play at 7 p.m. from Strawberry Stadium in Hammond.
