Southern set for 36th annual Bayou Classic
Saturday is chance for bragging rights. Southern and Grambling will square off in the 36th Annual State Farm Bayou Classic. The winner of the matchup does not head to the SWAC Championship game, making the clash between to the two arch rivals a year of bragging rights only.
Monday both coaches were on hand for the Bayou Classic Press Conference where they both said that this matchup means more to the fans than a trip to Birmingham.
"The only thing the alumni want to know what's going to happen in the Bayou Classic? They are not concerned about championships. They are concerned about this game." Pete Richardson said. Grambling Coach Rod Broadway echoed those thoughts. "It seems like the Bayou classic win is more important than the championship." "I made a mistake in saying (in years prior) that they don't give out rings for the Bayou Classic."
Last year, Grambling defeated Southern 29-14. In a game rich in tradition, Southern needs to break tradition to become a victor in New Orleans. The winner of the matchup has won back-to-back games since 2002.
The game is set for 1:00 in the Louisiana Superdome and will be nationally televised.
