Southern ready for better start to 2013
BATON ROUGE - Dawson Odums and his team rolled out of Ace W. Mumford's parking lot Thursday afternoon with hopes of improvement from last year's catastrophic season opener - a 66-21 loss at New Mexico.
"Coach Odums has been stressing win the first five minutes of the game," said senior quarterback Dray Joseph. "Of course that's what [Houston] wants to do to a smaller school, they want to score quick, get our first punt and get us to lay down."
How do the Jaguars guard against another snowball-type game Friday at Reliant Stadium? Composure.
"We know they're going to throw the first punch, theyll probably land it too," said senior defensive back Virgil Williams of the figurative fight during a game. "We may be down, but we have to get back up and throw a punch back."
Last year's road lesson is not lost on Williams and this Southern team.
"[New Mexico] put up 66 points on us last year, so we're going to do everything we can to make sure that doesn't happen again."
Southern squares off against the University of Houston Friday in Reliant Stadium at 7:30pm.
