BATON ROUGE - Members of the Southern University Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps took off on foot from the Baton Rouge campus this morning to deliver the Bayou Classic game ball to New Orleans.

Southern takes on Grambling Saturday in the annual rivalry at the Superdome.

Runners with the NROTC unit started their 100-mile trek around 5:30 a.m. from the F. G. Clark Activity Center. They are scheduled to arrive at Poydras Gate of the Superdome at around 4:30 p.m. today.

The run began in 1992 by several Marines who wanted to make sure the game ball was ceremoniously delivered to game officials before the beginning of the Bayou Classic. It now involves the entire Naval ROTC unit, which includes students from Southern University, Louisiana State University, Southeastern Louisiana University and Baton Rouge Community College.
