The Jaguar football team looked bad in the home and SWAC opener on Thursday night, spoiling a solid defensive effort with poor offensive play.
The Jaguars lost to Mississippi Valley State for the first time in seven years, falling 0-6 to the Delta Devils.
MVSU running back Brandon Stansell ran for 100 yards on 17 carries, Trey Bateaste scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter after Southern fumbled the snap on a punt near their own goal line.
Eddie Ivory completed eight of 11 passes for 53 yards for Mississippi Valley State (1-2, 1-1), and Keven Woods had 14 tackles and forced a fumble.
Dray Joseph was 12 of 29 for 114 yards and threw an interception for the Jaguars (0-2, 0-1). Joseph and back up quarterback JP Douglas each fumbled the ball as well.
The Jaguars must regroup as they face Jackson State next weekend.
The Advocate's Mike McCall reported late Thursday night that Southern Athletic Director William Broussard said no middle-of-the-night decisions will be made regarding Stump Mitchell's coaching future, he added it will be discussed tomorrow.
