Southern hoops takes home SWAC postseason honors
BIRMINGHAM - The Southern Jaguars may have missed out on the regular season SWAC title, but they made up for it with the individual honors.
Southern men's head basketball coach Roman Banks won the coach of the year, while point guard Tre'Lun Banks claimed freshman honors and center Calvin Godfrey was named the top newcomer in the SWAC.
Roman Banks led the Jaguars to a 19-11 record, including 15-2 in SWAC games.
Trelun Banks led Southern in assists and averaged 8.6 points.
Godfrey averaged 12.9 points and 8.8 rebounds.
Texas Southern forward Aaric Murray is the Southwestern Athletic Conference player of the year.
Murray was also named defensive player of the year in voting by SWAC coaches and sports information directors released Monday.
Murray led the SWAC in scoring, averaging 21.7 points and 7.7 rebounds a game. Murray also blocked a league-best 69 shots.
The Jaguars open play in the SWAC Tournament on Wednesday in Houston, Texas.
