Southern handles Jackson State 50-31
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Austin Howard was 21 of 32 for 395 yards, a touchdown and an interception, helping Southern beat Jackson State 50-31 on Saturday night.
Lenard Tillery added 135 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries for the Jaguars (2-1, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference). Willie Quinn had six catches for 107 yards and a touchdown while Randall Menard had four catches for 83 yards.
Jackson State (0-3, 0-1) trailed 29-7 at halftime but rallied to within 36-24 on Ryan Deising's 30-yard field goal with 1:57 left in the third quarter.
Malcolm Crockett and Austin Howard answered with TD runs early in the fourth for Southern to put it out of reach.
LaMontiez Ivy led Jackson State on 29-of-53 passing with three touchdowns and one interception.
