Southern grads to wear recycled caps, gowns
BATON ROUGE - Southern University's fall graduates will receive diplomas while wearing caps and gowns made from recycled plastic bottles.
Southern joins a growing list of universities that have moved to using such materials for caps and gowns. As a result, officials say they're helping to keep those materials out of landfills. The effort was organized by the Student Government Association, the campus bookstore and the university's student affairs office.
Bookstore manager John Dyer brought the idea of going green with caps and gowns to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Brandon Dumas and SGA President Simone Bray.
Graduation ceremonies are set for Dec. 13.
