The Southern Jaguar football team was picked to finish second in the SWAC West and fourth overall at the end of the season by coaches, administrators and members of the media at SWAC Football Media Day today in Birmingham, Alabama.

Head coach Dawson Odums guided the Jaguars to a 4-7 finish during his first year as interim head coach after taking over two games into the season.

The Jaguar's defensive back and kick returner Virgil WIlliams earned first team All-SWAC honors at those two positions while wide receiver Lee Doss and linebacker Anthony Balancier were also members of the preseason first team.

Southern was selected to finish behind defending SWAC champion Arkansas-Pine Bluff in the western division followed by Prairie View, Grambling and Texas Southern.

Alabama State was picked as the preseason conference champion, narrowly edging out Arkansas Pine Bluff.

In a vote by the league's football head coaches, sports information directors and select members of the media, Arkansas at Pine Bluff quarterback Ben Anderson was selected as the SWAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Jackson State defensive back Qua Cox was named SWAC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
