The Stump Mitchell era is off to a good start over at Southern University. The Jaguars overcame a 27-16 deficit and scored 21 unanswered points to defeat Delaware State 37-27 in the SWAC/MEAC Challenge in Orlando.
Mitchell pulled starting quarterback Jeremiah McGinty after the first half of play. McGinty went 7 of 16 for 74 yards and a TD. His backup Dray Joseph fared better. The freshman went 12 of 21 for 162 yards and a TD. He also scored on a 5 yard QB keeper with eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 4.
A 64 yard punt return by Corey Cushingberry gave the Jags the lead for good with just under five minutes remaining in the contest.
