Southern budget balanced... almost
BATON ROUGE-- Southern's University is balanced... almost. First, the university's board will have to approve a financial exigency, or in plainer terms, a financial emergency.
The only way to cut $2 million from faculty salaries is for the faculty to agree to ten percent furloughs or to declare a financial emergency.
Dr. James Llorens said only about 20 faculty members signed furlough contracts. Many told News 2 they wouldn't do it because it was "signing away" their rights.
Also in the proposed budget is cutting $1.3 million from adjunct professors and other personnel, $1.02 from faculty retirement incentives, and $1.8 by not filling vacant positions.
The board will vote on the budget Friday in Shreveport.
