Southern anticipates bigger incoming freshman class
BATON ROUGE - Southern University's campus may be a little more crowded this fall.
Around 800 students recently completed a freshman orientation program. That's more students than last year's entire incoming fall class last year of a little more than 700.
According to the university, new recruitment programs and the band's two recent appearances in the Super Bowl could be what's attracting students.
Communications Director Edward Pratt says the university won't know exactly how many freshman will attend Southern until classes start. However, he is hopeful these recent numbers indicate a bigger freshman class.
"We have students coming from Rurkey, students coming from Brazil, and hopefully that will bolster the first-time students," Pratt said.
Fall classes start Aug. 19.
