Southeastern gets at-large bid to playoffs
HAMMOND - The No. 10 Southeastern Lions (9-3, 7-1) will play their conference foe Sam Houston State (8-4, 7-1) in the first round of the FCS playoffs.
The game will be at Sam Houston State and streamed by ESPN3.com and the WatchESPN app. Kickoff is slated for 1pm Saturday.
The Lions and Bearkats shared the Southland conference title, but the Bearkats won the automatic bid to the playoffs via a tiebreaker and therefore will host the first round playoff game. The two teams didn't meet during the regular season.
Southeastern is ranked No. 10 in the country, Sam Houston State is unranked. FCS playoff committee chair Robert Hill says the two conference teams will meet in the first round is because of geography.
"Well it is the policy of the NCAA in championships that these early round games be addressed geographically as closely as possible and since the two teams did not play during the regular season. The committee does have policy that that should occur, if the geography works in that situation, those two teams would be paired. I know that neither one is probably crazy about the idea, but from a geography standpoint and policy that's what we had to do," said Hill.
Southeastern was hoping for one of the top 8 seeds that would give them a first round bye.
The winner of Saturday's contest will face the No. 3 seed Jacksonville St. on the road next weekend.
