Sorrento trailers deemed commercial
SORRENTO- A group of trailers, purported to be single-family homes, were deemed to be commercial buildings according to the State Fire Marshal's Office.
The trailers on Melancon St. in Sorrento have five exterior doors, but only one kitchen and living space. That's why the owners of the property claimed the buildings were single-family homes.
Today, State Fire Marshal Butch Browning told News 2 his office decided the intended use of the buildings was lodging and rooming, which means it's classified as commercial.
The area where the trailers are located is zoned single-family residential, which means the apartment-style trailers can't be rented out unless the owners has the lots rezoned to commercial. Sorrento's Town Hall clerk told News 2 the owners would have to file a request with the Planning and Zoning commission in order to get the approval.
The State Fire Marshal's Office said the owners would also have to comply with commercial standards, like installing fire sprinklers, before they could get approval.
