SORRENTO - Sparks flew in Sorrento Saturday morning at a special meeting to decide on the future of the town's police department.

Sorrento currently has only one quote on the table to provide insurance for the police department and an offer from the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office to step in and take over for the rest of the year.

The special meeting Saturday was held to discuss the options the town has to protect its residents, but the meeting provided more sparks than solutions after the actions of Mayor Mike Lambert.

"He called the whole town stupid," said one Sorrento resident. "Then the second thing that upsets me is when he stands up, tells the councilman sitting down next to him 'eff you' and walks out of the meeting."

Only three of five council members were present for the meeting. In the end, the council decided to table talks until Tuesday, Nov. 19 -- the same day the police department's current liability insurance ends. After the meeting, Councilman Randy Andy voiced his frustration with how the meeting went.

"He didn't want a discussion. His thing was he wanted to call for a vote, and he wanted to end the Sorrento Police Department. But again as you see with what the people are saying, the people are saying they want the police department," he said.

Sorrento Chief of Police Earl Theriot says Mayor Lambert owes the town and council an apology.

"If you're going to talk to people like that in this town, you don't need to be the mayor of this town," he said. "He forgot who put him in that office. That's the same people that can take you out for saying stuff like that."

The town will hold the next meeting at 6 p.m. at the Sorrento Town Hall.
