SORRENTO - The Sorrento Police Department received a quote for liability insurance that finally gives them the chance to reopen.
Indian Harbor Insurance Company, a surplus line carrier, offered a quote for liability insurance for the department with a premium of $34,937 a year.
Surplus lines are typically reserved for high risk items. It's why the insurance comes with a $25,000 deductible per claim and a yearly max of $500,000.
Some people on the Sorrento Town Council told News 2 they would have to see more of the quote before they could make a decision, but noted that they would take the quote seriously.
At least one councilman, Randy Anny, thinks the quote could be a viable alternative to 24-hour protection from the sheriff's office. He told News 2 the town would save money in the long run if it opted for the insurance, barring any missteps from the police department.
The council is expected to review the policy over the next few days, though a special meeting has not been scheduled to discuss the quote, it will likely be a topic of discussion at the next council meeting.
