BATON ROUGE - The City Park Golf Course has been registered as an historic landmark for 10 years, but there is a push to close one of BREC's most successful set of links.

The push comes from Rolfe McCollister of the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report, who says the space would have wider appeal as a 100-acre park.

He started an online petition that has nearly 600 signatures.

"Toms played here. Willie Nelson almost played here. City Park golf course is just an icon in Baton Rouge," said Lillie Gallagher, chairperson of Friends of Historic City Park Golf Course.

BREC said there are no immediate plans to shutter the course, but as it enters a new, decade-long planning period, petitioner opinions are welcome.

"This golf course made money, and they were using the money from this golf course to keep other golf courses afloat," Gallagher said.  "It's only nine holes, so people in today's busy lives, nine holes is a doable, fun thing to do. And when the bowlers come to town, this golf course is really busy."
