Sombreros restaurant reopens in Livingston Parish
WALKER - Wanda Elder spent Sunday afternoon with a relaxing meal at Sombreros Mexican Restaurant in Walker. It was the first time she and her family has had a break since being forced from their home because of rising flood waters.
Sombreros is one of the first restaurants to reopen for business after the flooding. And it was a busy day Sunday.
"We've just been trying to deal with all of this," Elder said. "So we came out to get something to drink, something to eat, to get away."
Elder lives in Livingston Parish, one of the hardest hit areas by last week's historic flooding. She moved into her new home just six months ago.
"The water started rising Friday, midday. It just got higher and higher," Elder said. "We went out by flat boat, with my kid, the dog and me."
Sombreros has been serving the community since the high-water started to rise. Sombreros' owner, along with two other restaurants coordinated to provide thousands of free meals to first responders and flood victims.
"I'm always part of the community," Owner Tommy Stojak said. "Always was and always will be part of the community. It's a small token from the heart and it is my pleasure that I could do that."
While some places are getting back to business as usual, Elder says that won't be the case for her.
"No, not yet. I think it will be a long time before it's normal," Elder said.
