NEW ORLEANS - The Defense Department says a 20-year-old soldier from Tickfaw has been killed in Afghanistan by a rocket-propelled grenade.

A news release Tuesday said Spc. Christopher R. Drake died Sunday in Bagram when the RPG hit his vehicle.

He was assigned to the 1084th Transportation Company, 165th Combat Support Sustainment Battalion, 139th Regional Support Group based in Reserve.

Drake joined the Louisiana Army National Guard in September 2011 as a truck driver and completed basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. While deployed, officials said he served as a gunner on a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle.

Family members traveled to Delaware to claim his remains today at Dover Air Force Base. Drake was a 2011 graduate of Independence High School.

News 2's Adrian Pittman will have more on the community's plans to honor their fallen soldier tonight.
