Solar panels to save expo center money
GONZALES - Lamar Dixon Expo Center will soon have more than 1,000 solar panels pumping energy into the facility.
The panels are part of a $1.5 million grant that will allow Ascension Parish to cut costs at the expo center.
"It's the perfect application in the perfect location," said Ken Dawson, the CAO for Ascension Parish. "We'll be putting panels around our lake at Lamar Dixon, that'll provide safety lighting and allow our residents to come out and enjoy the lake in the evening with lighting provided by solar power."
The majority of the panels will go up on three roofs cutting energy costs by about 10 percent and allowing Ascension to save at least $30,000 a year.
"The sun energy is free. The solar panels are free so we're just gonna maximize the utilization. There won't be any net metering from the utility stand point so we will be utilizing the power here on site and receiving the benefit of it," said Dawson.
The panels should be installed in the next two weeks and will start generating energy right away.
