Snail mucus ingested in religious ritual
Followers of a man in Miami who professes to practice a traditional African religion were shocked to learn they had to ingest the mucus of a giant African snail. Federal authorities got complaints and raided the home of Charles L. Stewart in January but he was not charged. The investigation continues because the giant Afican snail is prohibited in the U.S. without approval. Stewart told the Miami Herald newspaper he meant no harm and his religion uses the snail in healing ceremonies. Followers say they got violently sick, lost weight and developed strange lumps in their stomachs. The snail can grow up to 10-inches long and can even eat plaster. Its known to devestate ecosystems its introduced in.
