Small companies use crowdsourcing to raise big bucks

BATON ROUGE - A local video game company is hoping to fund its latest project using crowdsourcing and the internet.

Pixel Dash Studios is currently working on their latest game, "Road Redemption," and hopes to raise six figures to fund the development of their game using the website Kickstarter, which lets anyone help chip in to pay for a project.

"Kickstarter gives us the chance to present an idea to the masses rather than a publisher," said Evan Smith, with Pixel Dash Studios. "With the crowdfunding, you're simultaneously building your customer base, essentially, during your campaign process, you're trying to raise that money, you're getting that capital, you're building a fan base, you're building a relationship with the community, so as an indie game developer, it's super important."

Pixel Dash Studios said the crowdsourcing route also lets them test the waters before a big investment is made.

"Gauging interest is one of the main assets of Kickstarter, it's for people to tell you, 'do I want this, do I not want this, if I do want this take my money,'" said Claire Fontenot, Brand Manager with Pixel Dash.

Yellow Jacket Case, a company that created a smartphone case combined with a stun gun, used a similar site called Indiegogo to raise more than $100,000 for their company.

"If the passion is there, if the credibility is there that you understand what you're doing, you've shown drawings, plans, you've shown you can manufacture this product, all of that has to be fleshed out in the video and in your content, or people won't support you," said Sean Simone, co-founder of the Yellow Jacket Case.

Pixel Dash Studios plans to launch their Kickstarter campaign next month.
