Slidell woman dies in train crash
SLIDELL - A 57-year-old from Slidell is dead after trying to escape the path of an oncoming train Sunday night.
Slidell Police say Bonnie Gibbs was crossing the tracks at the intersection of Front and Lafayette streets when she accidentally drove off the road and into gravel by the railroad.
A train approached Gibbs as she tried to move the rear of her car off the tracks.
Police say she managed to jump out of the car in time, but the train hit the vehicle, sending it spinning into her.
Gibbs was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators don't believe impairment was a factor in the crash, but toxicology results are pending.
Police say this is the second deadly train accident Slidell has seen in two months.
