SLIDELL - The Slidell police SWAT team has a new $225,000 armored all-terrain vehicle that can hold up to 11 people.

Textron Marine & Land Systems, which is based in Slidell, gave the Tiger Light Protected Vehicle to the city of Slidell.

At a news conference Thursday, Police Chief Randy Smith said it can be used in life-or-death situations such as evacuating people from a shooting area or dealing with somebody holding hostages.

It's currently painted tan. The city plans to paint it black, with the SWAT team's logo.

The Tiger has an armored body and Cummins 350 horsepower diesel engine mounted on a modified chassis from the Dodge RAM pickup truck, and seats three to 11 people according to the company.
