The community college in Lafayette plans the first degreed midwife training program in Louisiana and four nearby states.

South Louisiana Community College dean Annette Accomando tells The Advocate that the program could begin as early as January if it wins fall approval from the regional accrediting agency.

The college's proposal says there's no certified midwifery program in Mississippi, Arkansas, Georgia or Alabama.

It says the closest certified program is part of the doctor of nursing program at Baylor University.

The Board of Regents gave conditional approval in August for an associate degree in applied science in midwifery.

The college will seek accreditation from the Midwifery Education Accreditation Council and approval from the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
