The town of Slaughter is in debt after recently spending $1 million on a new well water system to provide clean water for the town.
According to Mayor Bobbie Bourgeois, the old system was very old and outdated.
"Having to replace the water system left a huge burden on the town," Bourgeois said.
However, by updating the water system, the town improved its fire rating from a four to a three. The mayor said that will save people money on their insurance premiums.
News 2 is getting answers on how this debt impacts budget decisions made in Slaughter. Expect more updates throughout the day.
