Slain student's sons awarded full scholarships
Southern University is giving back to the family of an engineering student who was killed last month during a trip to San Francisco.
Michael Bailey was gunned down during a robbery attempt on Oct. 4, 2009.
Southern University presented full scholarships to his three sons on Tuesday. Three-year-old twins Derrin and Devin and 2-year-old Michael Bailey Jr. will have a free ride to Southern once they reach college age.
"We have a long history of family who have been Southern University graduates," said Deonne Bailey, Michael's wife. "It's just so fitting for Darrin, Devin and Michael to carry on the family tradition."
Deonne Bailey said she met her husband while attending Southern University. They were campus sweethearts.
Southern leaders said the scholarships will be a way to honor Bailey's achievements as an outstanding student. They hope his legacy will live on through his children.
