Two La. Deaths From Swine Flu Complications
The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals confirmed two additional deaths from complications related to the swine flu, bringing the total of swine flu related deaths in the state to six.
The victims included a female child from the Greater New Orleans area and a female young adult from the area that includes St. Tammany, Tangipahoa, and Washington parishes.
DHH did not release any personal details to respect the privacy of the individuals and their families.
"Any loss of life is tragic, but none more so than the loss of a young person. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families of these young people," said DHH Secretary Alan Levine. "If you have a child with a pre-existing medical condition, such as a respiratory or cardiac condition, diabetes, or any other co-occurring medical condition, please make sure your child knows to report any illness or symptoms immediately, and make sure they see a physician."
Pregnant women should also see a doctor immediately if they experience any flu-like symptoms.
DHH advises people to practice good hygiene to prevent spreading flu germs, like covering your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, washing your hands and avoiding close contact with sick people.
The Centers for Disease Control says anti-virals should only be used for treatment of flu cases based on CDC guidelines and the judgment of a physician. Anti-virals have potential side effects and people should always consult a physician before use.
