Sinkhole reveals possible tax evasion
BAYOU CORNE - The sinkhole in Assumption Parish uncovered some possible tax evasion, according to the parish assessor.
An audit revealed some companies in the parish may not be reporting all the taxable assets. Parish assessor Wayne Blanchard, along with the parish, decided to audit the companies on the dome to see if they were hiding something.
"It gives us somewhere to start now. For years they've paid taxes, but now it looks like maybe they could have been paying more," Blanchard said.
In fact, the audit revealed they could have been paying a lot more: up to $6 million. Blanchard sent a letter to those companies explaining the audit and stating they may have to make up the difference.
It's money the parish says it desperately needs.
"All we want is for everybody pay what they suppose to pay," Blanchard said. "We're not trying to run anybody off or asking them to leave the parish. All we want is for them to pay they're suppose to pay."
The parish will go before the state tax commissioner Tuesday to possibly get those bills adjusted.
