BAYOU CORNE - Officials in Assumption Parish scheduled a meeting tonight to update evacuated residents about progress made on a large sinkhole in the Bayou Corne area.

Texas Brine reported this weekend that they've removed more than 1,500 barrels of crude oil had been collected from a damaged salt cavern believed to be the cause of the sinkhole and bubbling in the nearby bayous.

Part of the briefing tonight will include concerns about other possible holes underground created by the cavern's collapse.

Residents have been evacuated from the community since shortly after the sinkhole formed on Aug. 3. Texas Brine, which owns the land the sinkhole appeared on, is paying a weekly stipend to help cover expenses for those forced out of their homes.

The briefing will be tonight at 6 p.m. at the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church Hall in Pierre Part.
