BAYOU CORNE - Emergency management authorities said a sinkhole in Assumption Parish expanded again overnight.

John Boudreaux, the director for the parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, said an additional 25 feet of land fell off into sinkhole. It's the second time this week the size of the area has grown.

Texas Brine, which owns the land the sinkhole appeared on, said drilling operations should breach into a nearby salt cavern either later this evening or early tomorrow. The company drilled the exploratory well to see if they could learn more about what caused the sinkhole last month, as well as gas bubbles which have been appearing in nearby bayous since this past May.

Residents who were told to evacuate organized a meeting tonight to try and get answers to lingering questions about the sinkhole and drilling operations. That meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church parish hall in Pierre Part.
