DENHAM SPRINGS - As meteorologists and forecasters were warning people about a winter storm that could leave as much as a quarter of an inch of ice blanketing the area, people were storming stores to gather essentials for days of being stuck inside.

As if it were a hurricane, stores became packed and items like bread and milk were hard to find.  At Carter's Supermarket in Denham Springs, bread was wiped clean from shelves.

"The demand has just flown through their expectations," said Carter's Manager Johnathan Battistella. "They're trying to get more out to us, as of right now, we're out."

Milk, bread and produce are among the first items to go at many stores. Some shoppers returned multiple times to get everything they needed.  They said it was better to be prepared then stuck.

"I'm going to pick up milk and whatever we need for breakfast in the morning," said one shopper.

Others, stocked up with firewood and enough food for a week.

"You never know." said one shopper. "Katrina took everybody by surprise. I don't want the electricity to go out and not have anything to keep warm."

Some grocery stores have changed store hours due to the severe weather. If you have to venture outside, call ahead.
