Accused Shoplifter leaves girlfriend's young daughter at scene
GONZALES - Police arrested a man this morning after stealing a television from a store and leaving his girlfriend's daughter there while fleeing from the scene on Friday, according to Gonzales Police.
The unnamed store called police saying a man had just stolen a TV valued at $300, and left behind a 9-year old girl.
According to officers, the child said she had been driven there by her mother's boyfriend, Adrian Churchill.
After contacting the girl's mother, they brought her home and discovered the mom had no idea the incident had taken place.
Police booked Churchill into Ascension Parish Prison and charged him with one count each of shoplifting, child abandonment, and contributing to the delinquency of a child.
When officers asked Churchill why he left the girl behind, he said he got scared after stealing the TV.
"Because of the despicable actions taken by the accused in this case, we wanted to share this story with the public. It is still unfathomable to us that someone can leave behind a defenseless 9 year old little girl in exchange for anything of value much less a three hundred dollar TV," said Det. Sgt. Steven Nethken with Gonzales Police Dept.
