Sherwood Middle Academic Magnet School has received the nation's top honor.
The Baton Rouge school is one of seven in Louisiana that earned Blue Ribbon status from the U.S. Department of Education. The award is given to schools for performance and for closing the achievement gap for some students. Schools can only apply to receive the award once every five years.
Principal Phyllis Crawford says the school looks for quality teachers. East Baton Rouge school officials say Crawford and her staff are strong leaders. They hope to implement those traits to other schools in the parish.
