BALDWIN - The St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office says a deputy injured in a shooting Sunday morning is listed in stable condition and still being treated at an area hospital Monday afternoon.

Sheriff Mark Hebert expressed his thanks for the outpouring of concern and support for the deputy, who was able to visit with fellow deputies Sunday night.

State Police reported Sunday that one man was arrested following the incident in Ashton, a St. Mary Parish community roughly 35 miles southeast of Lafayette.

At around 6:10 a.m., a caller told deputies he’d just shot someone at his home. Deputies responded to the scene and helped the wounded man into an ambulance, but at some point the caller began shooting from inside the house. The deputy was shot as a SWAT team was moving deputies away from the house.
