Sheriff: Mother drowns while saving child

CLINTON - Sheriff's deputies said a mother drowned while trying to save a child who in distress in the Amite River today.

Deputies in East Feliciana Parish said 38-year-old Martha Dartt from Denham Springs was swimming with her two children when it happened. They got out of the water okay.

Investigators said a 9-year-old swam out too far, and Dartt went out to save him. They said she slipped, and her body was found trapped under a log.
