Sheriff: minimal damage from well leak
PLAQUEMINE - The well that was leaking oil and gas off Highway 75 into the night isn't expected to leak anymore.
Iberville Parish Sheriff Brett Stassi tells News 2 that in hindsight the leak was inevitable. Stassi says the well had been pumping oil and gas for months, but was shut off for maintenance purposes which caused it to back up. The pressure eventually caused the seal to burst and spray oil and gas.
The well was temporarily fixed by pumping salt water into the well to push the oil and gas down. Crews are currently working on sealing the well completely.
"We don't expect any thing else. We think we're good now. Once we've fixed the well the cleanup will ensure and it will be a very minor clean up," said Stassi. He says roads opened up at around 11pm Friday night.
"We only had to evacuate one family but they never came home. Everyone else was able to get to their house, they just may have had to take a longer route," said Stassi.
