BATON ROUGE- Sheriff Sid Gautreaux added some extra personnel to the BRAVE initiative, a program focusing on combating crime in the Baton Rouge area.

Gautreaux said the work would use deputies already in the field and focus their efforts on statistically-proven targets that could minimize crime.

"One of the most important parts of this program is social networking analysis component, where they can identify, groups of offenders who are linked together through social networks, and determine based on mathematical modeling, what might be the best way to disrupt that criminal group," said Matthew Lee, the Associate Vice Chancellor of LSU's Research & Economic Development.

LSU will head up the research and statistical element of the project, while District Attorney Hillar Moore said they would critique and review more than a year's worth of homicides and non-fatal shootings for patterns that could help law enforcement.

"People and places, was it gang related was it drug related, was it over something else," said Moore, referring to the types of data they'll be looking researching.

The critique process of older crimes will be aided by law enforcement officials from Milwaukee, on their dime.

On top of the statistical elements, the BRAVE program will give possible criminals another option to keep them from a path of violence.

"In addition to changing norms we are also giving these persons, these offenders, alternatives to their violent behavior," said Sgt. Herbert Anny, with BRPD. That means offering vocational programs, social services and mentors.

On top of the Sheriff's involvement, Gautreaux commissioned the five Baton Rouge Police Officers with Parish commissions, which widens their jurisdiction.
